The History of Roller Skating
Published in Paperback by Natl Musuem of Roller Skating (June, 1997)
Authors: James Turner and Micheal Zaidman
Average review score:

Filling a niche, and it's about time!
The History of Roller Skating is a wonderful book about a topic that has been sorely neglected. Even most competitive roller skaters have very little knowledge of the history of their sport; Turner's book goes a long way toward filling in those gaps, with emphasis on the USA skating scene.

With lots of detail and many wonderful photos, this History is entertaining for those both in and out of the US competitive skating community. It's also of interest to ice skaters and ice skating fans who are curious about the shared history of ice and roller skating.

Color photos would be a nice edition to a future edition of this book (the current edition features black and white photos), especially in the chapter that talks about changes in skating costuming over the years. If there was anything else I would change, it would be to add more about the skaters who have made history throughout the years. Who were the great skaters, the equals of ice skating's Dorothy Hamill or Brian Boitano? Since roller skating doesn't get TV coverage, those skaters are unknown, and they shouldn't be. The book mentions some of the skaters and their feats, but more photos and statistics would be tremendous -- there really is no other source for them.

Even without those improvements, this is an excellent book that I can recommend with no reservations.

Home Sweet Fishbowl: Confessions of a Minister's Wife
Published in Hardcover by Word Publishing (April, 1982)
Author: Denise Turner
Average review score:

Encouraging and entertaining.
This book aptly describes the public side of life in the minstry. It is a good life, but it is best to know a little of what you're geeting into and what some of the limits are.

How to Quickly and Accurately Master Arrhythmia Interpretation
Published in Paperback by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins Publishers (January, 1989)
Authors: Dale Davis and Patrick Turner
Average review score:

Great introductory book on EKG interpretation!
A good systematic approach to EKG interpretation for the medical student. This book is a little weak on arrythmia interpretation, but it is exceptional at explaining axis deviation calculations, hypertrophy, and ischemic changes. Contains many practice EKGs with explanations.

Ivory Swing
Published in Hardcover by McClelland & Stewart (September, 1982)
Author: Janette Turner Hospital
Average review score:

You can live in India without leaving home.
I heard Janette Turner Hospital interviewed on public radio, and researched her at Amazon. I'm glad I did.

If you have the least amount of wanderlust in you, with just a touch of yearning for the experiences of living in South India, get this book. You can do all the aforementioned without leaving home.

Ms Turner-Hospital has written a descriptive account of life for an expatriate in India. Her story is a good one, with sufficent drama to keep you interested, all the way to the last climactic events. And she paints a very good picture as she tells the story. I felt I could draw every building and every scene.

The book is hard to find. I bought mine from Amazon, second hand, in pristine condition.

Now, please excuse me. I think my vindaloo is about to burn.

J.M.W. Turner "That Greatest of Landscape Painters": Watercolors from London Museums
Published in Hardcover by University of Washington Press (March, 1998)
Authors: Richard P. Townsend, J. M. W. Turner, Andrew Wilton, Philbrook Museum of Art, and David B. Brown
Average review score:

Master of Atmosphere
The watercolors of JMW Turner have the concise, simplified vision of contemporary art even though they were painted in the mid 1800's. This survey shows the progression of this master of light and delicate color from tightly delineated landscapes to the atmospheric , nearly abstract vistas of his late career. The reproductions are supported by quotes selected from writings contemporary to the paintings. This book provides an inspirational overview of the work of Turner and belongs in the library of the serious watercolor artist.

Authors: Joseph Mallord William Turner and Lindsay Stainton

Good value
This is a book of Turner postcards with perforations -- so that you can send the postcards or keep them as a reference. At around 20 cents each (even less when I bought it) it seems like good value.

Joe Turner's Come and Gone
Published in Paperback by New American Library Trade (October, 1992)
Average review score:

Find Your Song
The theme for Joe Turner's Come and Gone is best summarized by the character of Bynum: "Now, I can look at you, Mr. Loomis, and see you a man who done forgot his song. Forgot how to sing it. A fellow forget that and he forget who he is." The drama is a powerful piece discussing individuals' struggles to discover their purpose and connections in life.

Music and song are central elements of this work. Song is representative of identity. Bynum discusses his personal song - the Binding song: "people walking away and leaving one another. So I takes the power of my song and binds them together" (10). Song is also representative of memory. The Joe Turner song triggers a strong emotional response in Mr. Loomis, bringing back memories, questions, and anguish.

The most fascinating aspect of the play is how Wilson writes of each character's search for something. Although, their search for something results in a search in themselves. For example, Mr. Loomis comes to town looking for his wife. But what he is really looking for is his own song, his identity beyond slavery. He searches for answers and seeks his own salvation, not the salvation the Christian Church offers: "Great bid old white man. . your Mr. Jesus Christ. Standing there with a whip in one hand and a toteboard in another, and them niggers swimming in a sea of cotton" (93). Bynam searches for the shiny man: "Said there was lots of shiny men and if I ever saw one again before I died then I know my song had been accepted" (10). Bynum is not searching for the shiny men; he is searching for proof that makes his life significant and purposeful.

The drama is a short, powerful and emotional piece centering around the characters' struggle to search for identity and purpose. Each character journeys to realize an individual and personal salvation within him/herself.

John Koch: Painting a New York Life
Published in Paperback by Scala Books (October, 1901)
Authors: Phillip Lopate, Mina Rieur Weiner, and Grady T. Turner
Average review score:

Worth searching for
JOHN KOCH: PAINTING A NEW YORK LIFE was published as a catalogue for an exhibition and has become one of those fine books that didn't last beyond the time of the exhibit. Finding a copy is like searching for the end of the rainbow. But once found, you will wonder why this 'catalogue' wasn't converted into a book for the American libraries. John Koch was a fine painter, in the manner of Sargent, Eakins, et al but confined his paintings to either myths from the past or myth-like settings in the current New York society that admired his works. His talent was genuine, his sense of space and atmosphere among the best, and his figurative works stand with the best of them. This book is rather short on information but rich on exposing us to the works of an under-appreciated painter. Definitely worth going to the search engines for a copy. I would highly recommend that the transition to a second printing (and beyond) be considered by the author and editor. It is just too fine a book to let disappear!

John Turner: The Long Run
Published in Hardcover by McClelland & Stewart (October, 1984)
Author: Jack Cahill
Average review score:

John Turner's Life Encapsulated
The Long Run is a gripping story of one of Canada's most well known politicians, The Rt. Hon. John Turner. The story leads the reader down the times of Turner, citing his numrous accomplishments as a politcian, student, athlete, and businessman. It holds the reader captive through the many exciting descriptions of election campaigns and leadership conventions that Turner participated in, as both a candiate and a delegate. It also demonstrates his ability to forge friendships across political lines, and his talents as a family man. For readers of any political stripe, this book will be a pleasure to pick up.

Katie's Trunk
Published in Paperback by Aladdin Library (December, 1997)
Authors: Ronald Himler and Ann Turner
Average review score:

Katie's Trunk
During the time of the Revolutionary War, Katie's family were loyalists and needed to hide when the Rebels come into their house to raid it. Katie hides in a trunk away from her family because she didn't want to leave the house. She is spotted by a Rebel who is their neighbor. Katie used to be best friends with his daughter, but now they are no longer allowed to see each other because their families disagree on England's rule over the Colonies. Katie is unsure what will happen now that she's been spotted. This book helps my seventh grade students (or any reader), clarify who are the Tories, Rebels, Loyalists, Yankees, Redcoats and Patriots. The book is based on a true story of one of the author's ancestors.
